About This Site… & Me

Hi there! DSC_0036

I was right… You do want to know more about me and what this website is all about 🙂 First off, thank you for visiting my site and taking the time to learn more about me and this site. I’m Ijeoma (it means “safe journey”), and that’s me in the picture right there. Thank God I was having a good hair day.

This site is dedicated to two of my favorite pastimes – reading and watching movies. Yes, it’s possible, readers can also be movie lovers!

But there’s a twist. Even though I like reading a wide variety of books, on this site I will be focusing on African literature, hence the “African Lit” part of the name. There’s a new school of African authors on the literary scene and their writing is extremely powerful. Many are major literary award winners and while they have their loyal followings I’d like to use this site to draw even more attention to their books and other works that they are producing.

Then there’s the “Nollywoood Hit” part. If you’re familiar with Nollywood already then I don’t need to say too much more. Nollywood is the film industry of Nigeria and it has swept through the entire continent and beyond. I knew the industry had arrived when I was on an international flight on Virgin Atlantic and they had four Nollywood movies as part of the in-flight entertainment. If you’re new to the whole Nollywood craze, here’s some basic information:

  • Nollywood is Africa’s largest movie industry, and based on the total number of films produced annually, it is second only to Bollywood… Hollywood comes in third
  • Don’t look for Hollywood-style productions when you’re watching these movies though, they gained popularity despite their initial home movie-like quality but have since improved dramatically in sound and film quality while maintaining their unique trademark flavor
  • The majority of these movies are direct-to-VCD, well, now direct-to-DVD, however, don’t expect to find these in Redbox, but hopefully maybe Netflix will catch up and pick them up

My site is more than just another blog about books and movies though, I podcast too! Actually, podcasting is my main thing and my podcasts are my book and movie reviews. Every once in a while, I’ll interview one of the authors or Nollywood people… Yeah, that’s a tad bit ambitious on my part since I have no “industry connections” in the book or movie realms, but I’ll try my luck anyway 😉

I look forward to interacting with you and I welcome your feedback. Please feel free to leave comments on my podcast episodes and blog posts. You can also subscribe to my podcast in iTunes and if you like what you hear, please leave me an honest review in iTunes as well.

Now I’m trying to be everywhere so you can find and follow me on Twitter and Facebook where you can “Like” my page. All the buttons are on the right at the top of this page.
